Foldable Sounds Collective

Foldable Sounds Collective (INT) is composed of Daniela Maria Geraci, Lucy Rose Cunningham and Isabelle Pead, and formed in lockdown, April 2020.

Addressing sound as archival, performative and narrational, they interrogate its potential to sonically transport the imagination outside one’s four walls, drawing on a global need for freedom of movement.

The Foldable Sounds Project mimics the childrens’ drawing game ‘Exquisite Corpse.’ To date, 106 participants have recorded, shared and layered sounds to form 4 albums of intimate field recordings. Strangers placed into email chains are asked to follow the guide - 4 per track, 4 mins of recording, 2 days to pass it on. The collaborative process, the tracks and their collective listening feels resistant in a time when individualism is forced.

As a collective, they explore sound and listening as tools for collectivism, activism, meditation, archiving knowledge, and attention giving. Through their projects and research, they work with various sound-workers to gain insight into their practices, while also urging critical conversations around the lack of diversity and accessibility in the field.

The trio curate and perform mostly throughout the UK and Germany. They were selected as SHAPE artists, 2021, have exhibited in STIFF International Festival in Rijeka, Croatia, featured on NTS, Netil Radio, Balamii and Soho Radio, and are residents of NARR radio (Leeds) and Resonance Extra (London).
