Kate Lowes (Head of Programmes and Development - Brighter Sound)

Kate Lowes is Head of Programmes at Brighter Sound. Kate has worked in music for over 20 years as a performer, in community focused-work, artist development, event production and more recently as a researcher.

She has recently completed a PhD at the University of Manchester researching the gender gap in the British Music industry. Kate’s research is practice-based and connected to her development of the Both Sides Now initiative which runs across the North of England to support early career female artists and influence change with regards to gender equality in music.

Brighter Sound is a pioneering music development organisation working across the North of England to support the music creators, leaders and industry professionals of the future.

Their creative projects, residencies, training and events support career artists and young musicians with everything from creative and career development, to building communities and personal confidence.

Brighter Sound’s work is rooted in activism, and in creating a fairer and more equitable music industry. Alongside opportunities for artists across the North, Brighter Sound will continue to lobby for change through their Gender Equality Manifesto and as sector lead for Manchester’s membership to the international Music Cities Network to support Northern artists, and strengthen links between the North and the rest of the world.
