Kate Lowes
Kate Lowes is Head of Programmes at Brighter Sound. Kate has worked in music for over 20 years in artist development, event production and more recently as a researcher. She has recently completed a PhD at the University of Manchester researching the gender gap in the British Music industry.
Kate’s research is practice-based and connected to her development of the Both Sides Now initiative which runs across the North of England to support early career artists and industry leaders while campaigning for change with regards to equality in music.
Brighter Sound is an award-winning music development organisation based in Manchester. For over 22 years they’ve been supporting young creatives, emerging artists and up-and-coming music professionals in the North of England to develop creatively, professionally and personally. Brighter Sound’s work spans all areas of the sector, from music education to the music industry, all musical styles and genres, and all levels, from local grassroots activity to global strategy as the sector lead for Manchester Music City.

Their programme includes artistic residencies, community-rooted workshops, training and professional development, peer-led support networks, bespoke mentoring, live events and All Things Equal - a large-scale gender equality initiative and manifesto for change.
