North Yorkshire Music Hub

The Music Service run six Music Centres running on a Saturday morning and some evenings after school. They are based in Scarborough, Whitby, Harrogate, Selby, Skipton and Northallerton.

The Music Centres are open to all ages and cater for a wide range of abilities. They run a range of ensembles including bands, orchestras, choirs, folk groups, guitar and ukulele and mixed ensembles for absolute beginners.

Blast Off

Suitable for all woodwind and brass players who have either just started learning or have had lessons for about a year. Also open to beginner percussionists and pianists up to grade 2 who would like to try percussion.

The band plays music tailored to the abilities of the children who attend and serves as an introduction to playing in an ensemble as well as addressing some of the basic skills of playing a wind instrument.

Musical Munchkins

A brand new parent and child group for young children aged 3-4 designed to help young children develop a love for music and improve their cognitive skills using age-appropriate musical activities. Activities will include singing, dancing and playing musical instruments to engage your budding young musician and help to develop their communication, emotional intelligence and to build their confidence.

Sound Explorers

A brand new music-making group for children aged 5-7 designed to help young children develop a love for music and improve their cognitive skills using age-appropriate musical activities. This lays a strong musical foundation for your budding musician to be able to build on should they decide to start learning a musical instrument at age 7.

Harrogate Youth Jazz Orchestra

A senior ensemble offering opportunities to those students who wish to explore jazz technique and repertoire.

Youth Choir

An exciting youth vocal group at HMC; singing your favourite pop songs and more in a fun environment whilst developing musicianship and technical vocal skills. Members will learn how to work as a group as well as getting the chance to sing solo.

EASY Band

The EASY Band is the senior Symphonic Wind Band at the Scarborough Area Music Centre, comprising of approx. 40 musicians who come from across the Scarborough, Whitby, and Ryedale areas.

The band’s repertoire is very diverse and includes popular classics, arrangements from films and musicals, jazz standards, and original compositions for Wind Band.

The band undertakes various engagements throughout the year both in Scarborough and the surrounding area. The band is always on the lookout for new members and welcomes woodwind, brass, and percussion players of grade 3 standard and above.

Jazz Train

Jazz Train was formed in September 1999 and was created to provide younger musicians with the opportunity to experience Jazz music in a Big Band set up at a more elementary level.

The players are made up of Junior Concert Band and E.A.S.Y. Concert Band members, as well as players from outside Saturday Morning Music Centre. The chosen repertoire of music includes Swing, Rock, and Ballads, as well as current “Popular” music, and gives members the chance to experiment with improvised solos.

JCB (Junior Concert Band)

The Junior Concert Band provides students of wind, brass and percussion with their first steps on the Music Centre ladder.

Students come along to Junior Concert Band once they have acquired a basic technique on their instrument, probably after about six months from starting lessons. During their time in the Junior Concert Band students learn the disciplines involved in ensemble playing and receive valuable coaching on musical techniques through a variety of different styles of music.

 

The Junior Concert Band provides students of wind, brass and percussion with their first steps on the Music Centre ladder. Students come along to JCB once they have acquired a basic technique on their instrument, usually around Grade One standard. 

The ensemble plays a variety of musical styles with pieces progressing in difficulty throughout the year.

BIG (Beginner Instrument Group)

Formed in 2010, this group as its title suggests is for young players with a little experience, perhaps the ability to play five or six notes. Membership is open to any instrument.

S.A.Y.St.O. (Scarborough Area Youth Strings Orchestra)

A senior string orchestra consisting of upper and lower string players from grades 3, 4, and above.

They tackle a varied variety of string music from Baroque to modern in a chamber group setting.

Ebony

Ebony was originally formed to offer a different ensemble experience to young woodwind players and to encourage members to assist or join the larger ensembles which require a strong woodwind section. Since its inception, the young players in Ebony have explored a wide variety of music and learned a great deal about woodwind playing.

New players are most welcome and need to be approximately Grade Two playing standard or above.

Guitar Ensemble

As the guitar is rarely considered an orchestral instrument, the guitar ensemble provides a valuable opportunity for our young players to explore the possibilities of what a larger group can do. 

They perform in concerts, typically at the end of each term, and tackle music from a wide range of styles and genres. There is also the opportunity for the more advanced players to get together and tackle some challenging material.

SMC Concert Band

Bring together Brass, Strings, Woodwind and Percussion Instruments to perform a wide range of music. Players would need to be at least around Grade 1 standard to join this group.

All instruments welcome. Players would need to be at least grade 3 in standard.

Our friendly adult recorder group, playing more advanced repertoire.

 

SMC Rock Band  

9.30am -10.45am

Aimed at Grade 1+. All ages and fretted/strummed instruments. A limited number of places for singers, keyboard players and drummers are also available.

This ensemble focusses on reading skills, rhythm and control of tone while at the same time giving ensemble members the enjoyment and fun that is gained through group music making. All of this is taught through contemporary/pop/rock repertoire

The Group lessons are 30 minutes each and will be scheduled throughout the morning. Instruments can be provided if required.

Numbers are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

 

Music Production 

11.00am -12.15pm

Aimed at those interested in creating, editing, recording, mixing and producing music. Ages 10+ (Year 6 and above).

No instrumental experience necessary, but those attending must bring their own tablet/laptop. Software access is provided.

This ensemble provides the opportunity to learn about how to record live music, compose/create digital music, edit and produce music. Music theory and skills are taught as a part of the course through practical application.

 

Beginner Band

9.30am-10.45am

Our Beginner Band is open for all beginner instrumentalists to develop their musical skills in a friendly and supportive environment. Led by a range of specialist instrumental tutors, early level players will enjoy playing games and making music together.

Junior Strings

Standard: Pre-Grade 1 – Grade 4
Time: 9:30 – 10.45

Junior Strings is made up of string players between the ages of 7 and 13 who enjoy spending their Saturday mornings playing music together. New players need to be able to read notes with reasonable ease.  The strings rehearse from 9.30 – 10.45 and then join together with Junior Band to form a Choir and Junior Orchestra from 11.15 – 12.30

Advanced Wind Band - Galeforce Wind Band ‘G’
Standard: Grade 4+
Time: 11.15 – 12.30

The Advanced Wind Band is made up of wind, brass and percussion players who enter the ensemble at around Grade 4 standard. The music will range from arrangements of famous classics to music from films, shows, TV programmes and pop songs including the Music from “Hairspray” and Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever”.

Always looking for new players, particularly Trombone, Tuba, Oboe and Bassoon.

 

Junior Band
Standard: Grades 1+
Time: 9:30 – 10:45

The Junior Band is made up of wind, brass and percussion players, welcoming recent beginners up to about grade 4 standard. The music will range from arrangements of famous classics to music from films, shows, TV programmes and pop songs.

The Band rehearse from 9.30am to 10.45am and then join together with Junior Strings to form a Choir and Junior Orchestra from 11.15am to 12.30pm.

 

Symphony Orchestra
Standard: Grades 5 – 8
Time: 9:30 – 10.45

From Grade 5 standard upwards join our wonderful symphony orchestra. All things Strings with added Woodwind, Brass and Percussion.

 

Senior Strings

Size: Approx 20
Standard Grade 4+
Time: 11.15 – 12.30

The ensemble builds on techniques, including communication and stylistic playing. They perform a varied repertoire of music including “Capriol Suite” and popular music, including “The Best of Abba”. The Gilda String Quartet worked with the group to help them develop their communication skills. Students studying composition may wish to use this group to rehearse their compositions for GCSE and A level.

 

Choir

Time: 11.15 – 12.30

For all those who enjoy singing. Music will be drawn from a wide range of styles. All ages and standards welcome.

 

#Banned

Standard: Pre-Grade 1
Time: 9:30 – 10.45

Fun and great music for all young musicians, from absolute beginners who only play a note or two up to grade 1/2 standard.  This group is aimed at students who are in the very early stages of learning an instrument. They will use their own instruments as well as other percussion instruments and music is based on their individual levels and abilities.  This is a great opportunity for potential members to follow up on ‘Wider Opps’ provision in primary schools, for example students that have played a little wood wind, brass or strings for a term at primary school. Players will generally graduate into Junior Strings/Wind Band.

Esk Valley Concert Band

9.30am – 10.45am

This ensemble features a wide range of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments and often has 50 players who need to be working at around Associated Board Grade 4 standard or above.  Its repertoire includes many different styes of music including jazz, rock, pop, film, folk and classical.  The EVCB give several concerts each year, mostly in and around Whitby though occasionally further afield.

 

Esk Valley Big Band

11am – 12.15pm

The Big Band has a full complement of trumpets, trombones and saxophones supported by a strong rhythm section.  It welcomes players who are at Associated Board Grade 4 standard and above.  It performs big band repertoire from forties’ music  through to contemporary pieces.  Since 2007, the EVBB has been a popular feature at many events around the town and keeps a busy diary of bookings. 

 

Whitby Area Concert Band

11am-12.15pm

This is our Junior Band, a great place for those who are in the early stages of learning an instrument to gain valuable experience and develop their skills alongside other players.  Woodwind and brass players at Associated Board Grade 1-3 standard are welcome to come along and learn a range of music including jazz, rock, pop, film, folk and classical.  The WACB usually perform twice a term in and around Whitby.

 

Whitby Music Centre String Ensemble

11am-12.15pm

This ensemble offers string players the opportunity to play together with beginner players learning and gaining inspiration from more advanced members of the ensemble.  If you play violin, viola, cello or double bass, this is the group for you and it provides tuition in orchestral skills and string techniques as well as rehearsing for concerts.  The Whitby Music Centre String Ensemble explores a wide range of music, some composed especially for string orchestras and some arranged for this group.  It performs regularly throughout the year.

 

Whitby Trainers

This group gives woodwind and brass players who are right at the start of their journey This group gives woodwind and brass players who are right at the start of their journey the opportunity to get together and have some fun learning alongside each other.  As soon as a player can produce a reliable sound over at least five notes, they are welcome to join this group and our staff will ensure that everyone has something that they are able to play.

 

Selby Music Centre

This group is for beginners to grade 1 on violins, violas, cellos, double basses, guitars and keyboards.

Folk Group / Selby All Sorts

Playing some folk tunes plus blues, rock and pop covers, students need to be able strum a range of chords on their guitar, or have been playing their instrument for a few terms. It is also open to strings, woodwind and brass players.

Selby Youth Choir
